If you’ve recently had surgery—whether it was an orthopedic procedure, a C-section, or a cosmetic treatment like liposuction—you’re likely dealing with the "unholy trinity" of recovery: swelling, bruising, and stiffness.
While rest and hydration are key, there is a specialized tool we use here at Massage Hope to help your body cross the finish line faster: Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).
The Science: Why Surgery "Stalls" the System
When you have surgery, the localized trauma causes fluid to rush to the area to protect it. This is a natural part of healing, but too much fluid (edema) actually slows down recovery by putting pressure on your stitches and decreasing circulation.
Because the lymphatic system doesn't have a "pump" like the heart, it can get overwhelmed. That’s where we come in.
How MLD Helps You Heal:
Reduces Swelling & Pain: By gently moving stagnant fluid back into the circulatory system, we take the pressure off your nerves and incisions.
Prevents Fibrosis: For post-cosmetic surgery (like lipo), MLD is crucial for preventing the formation of hard, "lumpy" scar tissue known as fibrosis.
Boosts Immunity: By keeping the lymph moving, we help your body transport white blood cells to the surgical site to fight off potential infection.
Speeds Up Bruising Recovery: Increasing lymph flow helps the body reabsorb the blood cells that cause those deep purple bruises.
The Massage Hope Approach
We know it can be a little scary to think about someone touching a surgical site. But remember: we are "massage nerds" for a reason! MLD is not a deep-tissue massage. It is an incredibly light, rhythmic skin-stretching technique. Most of our post-op clients find it so relaxing they actually fall asleep on the table.
When Should You Start?
Every doctor has different protocols, but many of our clients start their sessions as early as 4–7 days post-op (with a doctor's clearance).
